Belgium Chips (Brighton) Food Review

My choice to return to Belgian Chips in Brighton was influenced by my great appetite, love of sauces, and my recent terrible mistake of forgetting to get traditional Belgian Fries the two times I was in Belgium recently. My initial desire was to go for more of a traditional Belgian Fry style sauce, but my choice was quickly swayed by a desire for the taste of home, a more American pallet, once I realised I could order both Louisiana Buffalo Sauce and ranch on top of my fries. I chose a large fries, which at £8.50 seemed like a steep price, but my mind was already set and there was no going back, but the additional discovery that each sauce was an additional £1 (making my total £10.50) was a brutal realisation. The chips were half cooked with a initial fry already done, but I watched as they did the double fry fresh so they would be hot and ready, and I did appreciate that step. I had an option of salt and vinegar, which I opted for the salt option, and I watched as they salted the chips to a nice level and stirred them in a mixing bowl to ensure an even distribution, a move I thought was incredible and think should be a standard now. The chips were hot and ready, although they definitely felt more like traditions British chips, just a bit crunchier (and sadly… much greasier), but they were solid. The portion was massive, so while the price was steep, I did find that they were not skimping on a large size at all. Evenly split down the chips was one side buffalo, one side ranch. A part of me wished they were mixed, but I do believe that keeping the sauces separate as a general rule is a much better plan. First I tried the buffalo side, it was a bit shockingly sweet, but otherwise carried a decent classic smoky and creamy buffalo flavour with a mild but notable kick behind it. The ranch side was sadly not up to the standards I have for ranch, I found the sauce to be more tangy (with almost a sourness to it) than a rich creamy zesty flavour. I felt like both sauces being a bit off ruined the experience of a proper buffalo ranch experience for me, and to be honest, I felt like nothing about Belgian Chips resembled Belgian Fries. I wouldn’t say to avoid, but the odds of me returning again soon are slim. 5/10
